Return To Ragged Mountain

Jlynn Frazier

Location: Ragged Mountain, Rockport, Maine

Weather: 64 and humid when I took off down the trail at 6:30am, 80 and thick with heat and my exhaustion when I left the trail a few minutes before 9.

Observation: Today delivered on every ounce of heat and humidity our weather scientists and observers have been suggesting was heading to Maine. After working all week, I was thinking about sleeping in a bit because I’m really tired. Then I thought better of it. I wanted to run and knew the best time was the morning. So I decided to get up and hit the trail in whatever form I was in and then to fill my day with rest and recovery.

I actually even woke up before the alarm! It has been awhile since I’ve been to Ragged Mountain. I couldn’t help but to smile and feel comfort when I pulled into the parking lot and saw that I was the only one there.

It was hot, humid, and I literally sweat buckets along the way. The birds were cheering me along and welcoming me back to the trail. At least I would like to think they were anyways. Perhaps the song was also my own pouring out like the sweat from my body. One of gratitude, fortitude, and raw authenticity. I have struggled with what seems to be a sort of misalignment within myself and the rhythms of my body. This has led me on a hard journey that I’m still on. A morning like today was just what I needed. A time to connect with Mother Earth and all the glorious creatures, to which I am one.
