Still I Rise

Inspired by the words of Maya Angelou’s poem, Still I Rise, I have written my own poem of the same name.

Still I Rise

You may laugh, mock, and maim
With your language of hate
Twisting words, bending truths
But still, as my sisters before me
I rise.

Did you want to silence me?
A woman better to be seen, not heard?
I do not recognize the submission you seek
My whole heart aches for a better tomorrow
My voice echos a hopeful rally cry.

You may abuse, assault, harass, and shame
I’ve been given many reasons to hate
My eyes wide open
Face turned toward the sun like a sunflower
I choose to soak in the sunshine of love.

Does my courage offend you?
As the song in my body radiates confidence, kindness, and strength
I have felt the bitter cold, bone chilling winds of winter
Springs renewal will come again
Change is just over the next mountain

Just as the sun rises and sets
I am awakening, growing stronger each day
Because I walk, head held high
Truth pumping through my veins
And, again, I will rise.

Does my strength surprise you?
That I might dare to hold my ground
I rise
Feet planted deep in the earth
Sturdy like roots of a tree
I rise
I am my father’s daughter
I am my grammy’s girl.

To all my sisters, my brothers too
I hope you’ll comfort me, as I will for you.
I rise
Heed the warning of Mother nature,
The wisdom of our ancestors
I rise
Leaving behind the darkness of violence and fear
Together, the dawning of a new way forward
Rise
Keep rising
I rise.

Three Poems

Ocean of Love

my heart
lost, found
seeking,i  begin
recreating myself
sailing my own ship

rough waters
grounding ashore
then you appear
blown in
a strong northwesterly wind

cast me off the island
an independence
splitting open
rope unraveling
i threw down my anchor

Discombobulated

discombobulated day
ebb, flow, sway
tumble and fall
rise, stand tall
from yang to yin
maintaining a grin
ebb, flow, sway
discombobulated day

Tall Boots

tall boots
swimming in layers
polyester and wool
big yellow shovel
scooping up
handfuls of white
new fallen snow
